Four Qualities of a Strong Board of Directors

A board of directors is composed of individuals who provide effective governance to an organization. This includes non-profits. Strategic vision: The board should provide a long-term view, supporting the chief executive officer and other senior leaders set the strategic priorities. It should also be able to assess the effectiveness of the company’s strategies, and create an environment that is constructive and supportive that encourages creativity.

A well-run board has members who are knowledgeable about financial and governance as well as legal issues. It could also include members who have expertise in other areas, including sustainability, talent management, and digital transformation. Depending on the needs of the business the board can consist of employees, volunteers or members selected by other shareholders.
